Tall and Petite as it relates to Plus Sizes

Happy Holidays to everyone

In my last post I said I would talk a bit about these two speciality size ranges within the already specialty size business of plus sizes.

Addition Elle, Penningtons and MXM all carry petite pants (and capris in summer) and tall pants are carried in select stores in select basic pants and denim. Tall sizes for women (plus or regular) is the fringe business within an already fringe business. To be brutally honest we can not invest inventory in the tall sizes as our experience has shown that we do not sell what we carry for the very reason we either a. have the inventory in the wrong stores or b. the few tall plus customers we do have on our database do not like what we carry. Have we given up on Mrs. Tall Plus? no we will continue to carry some pants in select stores and we will always have the sizes in the online store.
One thing we do though is ensure that our regular pants have generous inseam lengths.

Within plus size petite sizes over 50% of our bottom business is petite.
I can tell you that our petite top sales are just ok. It is a tough business to address.
In Addition Elle ,select styles are purchased spec'd to petite sizes. In Penningtons and MXM the petite plus customer is served through various lengths of tops in the tshirt and blouse departments. Pennigtons also provides a few styles of petite plus sized outerwear/coats.

We have found through studying our sales and by reviewing our database customer information that our tall customers are younger then the average customer and they are likely to be in western Canada. Our petite plus customers are older are likely to be in Ontario and Quebec.

I would welcome any comments from you. Ms.Plus Tall and Ms. Plus Petite.

Comments for Tall and Petite as it relates to Plus Sizes

Being a youngish professional who is a towering 5'3 with a fuller hip and thigh I am very partial to the petite pants for my body type at addition-elle. Because of my full-figured shape I prefer to wear longer tops to give myself a more flattering silhouette. I am sure that many other women feel the same, which would be the reason why your petite top sales are not as strong. I tend to be drawn to a lot of the tops in the MXM line because they are versatile enough to be worn to work or out and about. The only drawback of the MXM line for me is the pants! Very rarely do I see any petite pants and there are absolutely no MXM pants for women with fuller hips and thighs, which is a shame because I think some of the pants are very cute, but I just can't wear them because they all have tapered legs. I see the MXM line is more geared to younger women but not all young women are taller and only a size 14. Once you get up into the larger sizes tapered legs are very unflattering and I really think it would be wise to find a way to cater to both the younger taller and younger full-figured/petite women with your MXM line.

Hi there, As a woman who is 6'0 tall I would like to say that the selection of tall plus is sparse, would the possibility of carrying a wider range of tall sizes (especially pants) online be considered?

I get very frustrated in your store as although I am shorter in stature at 5'5" I have long legs and need a regular length pant. The Petites are about 2 inches too short in length. You have one and if I am lucky two types in regular pants or suits but so much more in petite. How about giving those of us who want a regular a bit more choice.

Just a few hours ago i actually sent an email to Reitmans concerning the fact that they pulled the tall plus size line in their store in Windsor On. I just want to say that if I were a short plus size woman and all I could find were tall pants and jeans, at least I would have the option of having them hemmed or altered, as many petite women have done for ages. It is very frustrating to me that I can't find tall pants or jeans in any of the plus size stores in Windsor Ontario. I credit MXM for bringing updated styles to Penningtons and Additionelle but let's be realistic here, it wouldn't kill you to offer one or two pairs of dress pants and jeans to your customers. You offer many petite selections in pants and jeans when the regular customer that I see in these stores are of average height or they are Tall. Maybe the reason that the tall pants don't seem to be selling, is because you don't give us a chance to realize that you have them. It seems that as soon as we realize that a store offers these tall jeans/pants, the retailer is already pulling them from the inventory. The bottom line is that not all fat people are short.

I’d like to reply to the comments on Doug Edwards’ “Tall & Petite” blog, as I am responsible for some of the frustration our customers have expressed. Addition Elle’s Work & Weekend pant buyers are in the midst of revising our fits and will be testing several new pant fits this Spring in regular sizes, namely SLIM, CURVY & SHAPED. Slim will fit the woman who has a straighter line from waist to thigh, and sits just below the natural waist. Shaped will appeal to those whose figures are gently curved from waist to hip. Try Curvy if you are more of an hourglass figure, with a smaller waist & fuller hips. These new fits will be offered in select styles and stores, as well as on line mid February & we look forward to your comments! “A Bit Frustrated, would you consider trying our new fits? They will be regular length, but more tailored to your body shape & may suit your needs better than a Petite style. We are also testing a new boot cut, which is flattering on a full figure woman. “EL”, I think this will address your concern on tapered legs and would love your comments if/when you do try our new fits. We are also revisiting our Tall selection, and intend to drop our ‘Essential’ Tall pant and replace it with more fashion/color choices this coming Fall. This means that Tall will no longer be a basic item. Instead, our Tall customer will have more fashion and seasonal color options. Why wait until Fall? Our pant business tends to shift to Capris in the Spring, so we felt the Tall Addition Elle customer would be better served by having more options in the Fall. I hope “Sarah & Elizabeth” will be pleased with our Fall assortment. Happy Shopping! Laura

I would like to comment on the tall pant issue being discussed since I am 6 feet tall and a size 22. I managed to find 2 pairs of tall dress pants when you first started to carry them and then couldn't get any more when I found that none were in stock. How can you claim that they were not selling when we couldn't find stock available? I went to most of your stores in the GTA west and also Lindsay & Peterborough when visiting the Kawartha's last summer. The two pair I did find were after repeated trips to the GTA stores. Going back multiple times to the same stores is very frustrating and time consuming when people only have after work or weekends to shop. As far as ordering on line - why should I have to pay shipping for something you claim to have available in your stores and then pay shipping back when it doesn't fit. Maybe you should be making your pants unhemmed like menswear - no hems just an ample length to fit multiple customers.

I also am stressed in finding plus sized tall pants. Due to the exclusion of the tall selection, I am being forced to wear skirts and tights all winter as the regular length pants are too short and will just look ridiculous on me. I think there should of been better thought put into what to do with the Tall selection. Maybe sell it as a small collection or make the regular ones longer or unhemmed like Nan suggested. I don't understand why none of the stores that carried Tall have come up with solutions for plus tall customers. How is it fair that people 3-15 get their tall pants and we plus sizes get ditched. It isn't. Especially since you allow our petite gals to have their selection. There wasn't even a heads up warning. Not professional of you.

I would like to respond to the tall plus ladies who have voiced their disappointing thoughts on our pant assortments. Penningtons and Addition Elle have not forgotten you. Both divisions have been updating their pant assortments, the fabrics and the fits (still not done) and within the new assortments there will be better selections of tall and petite plus pants. Petite pants go to all the stores but tall do not. They go to many stores so please call ahead. Being added in spring are tall fits of our newest and most comfortable pull on styles. When I have more actual delivery information I will add a new post to the blog. In conclusion Addition Elle has tall styles today.
